A reminder from Mother Earth

Sunday, December 26, 2004

A reminder from Mother Earth that our stay in Her dominion is subject to Her mercy and grace. Let us pray that She restores her grace on those affected by this catastrophe.

From the BBC:

More than 7,000 people have been killed across southern Asia in massive sea surges triggered by the strongest earthquake in the world for 40 years.

The 8.9 magnitude quake struck under the sea near Aceh in north Indonesia, generating a wall of water that sped across thousands of kilometres of sea.

More than 3,200 died in Sri Lanka, 2,200 in Indonesia and 2,000 in India.

Casualty figures are rising over a wide area, including tourist resorts on Thailand packed with holidaymakers. (Continued)

Eerily, this quake has taken place exactly one year (to the day) after the 6.6 magnitude earthquake in Bam (Iran) that killed some 30,000 people and flattened the city.

chanad there was a fault line discovered abt 2 yrs - ie made public in India & Sl and otehr asian countries.... and everyone knew abt the earthquake... but ppl didn't expect it to happen so soon.....

and in Bahrain... ppl still wish to ignore all the environmental damage they cause here.... well... today we saw the bad side of the environment.... hope ppl will wake up soon and stop hurting themselves soon ;)

They would have known that there was an earthquake coming, and that it was going to be a big one. But there is no way to tell when. This is same all over the world. Siemologists (sp) can measure stresses and tensions in the Earth but they do not know when an earthquake will occour.

Sadly another reson for the large loss of life is the lack of education regarding earthquakes and tsunamis in minimal. In the pacific rim, where earthquakes are common place, residents know that when the tide receeds rapidly they should run away because that is the main warning sign of a tsunami. However in the South-Asia region apparently many people when up to the water the see what was the matter. Hopefully when this crisis is over world governments will realise that it can happen to them.

It is good to see that many governments are offering help and aid. Hopfully they will put their money where their mouths are.

It would have helped though if they'd had a tsunami warning system. There's no way to stop it, but an early warning system might have saved more lives.

a wake-up call from God for the rest of mankind. We are mere mortals and can be wiped out in an instant.

A "wake up call" for whom, Bahrania? For the families of the tens of thousands of mainly poverty striken Hindus, Muslims and Buddhists killed in the disaster?

If you believe that earthquakes and tidal waves are divine judgement or messages, then for you this raises the question of the Bam earthquake which killed 30,000 people in Iran's Islamic Republic - the country that your Al Wefaq looks to as a model. So using your logic what does this say about God's judgment of your brand of extremism?

Scorpio, I'm just wondering... is there anything about Bahrania that ISN'T connected with her sympathies for Al-Wefaq and its evildoings?

Whether it's intentional or not, it is a reminder of how small we are which is a good thing to remember.

Oops, I just realized I mimicked your post, Chan'ad. Oh well, consider it an endorsement. :D
