Protest tomorrow

Wednesday, November 17, 2004

Just a reminder that there will be a protest tomorrow morning at 10am near the Bahrain Financial Harbour site in support of Al-Khawaja and the remaining 12 detainees. Apparently they will be releasing lots of "balloons of freedom" as part of the demonstration (it took me ages to figure out what "بالونات" was. I kept reading it as "balwinat"... yes, I'm a fool).

Also, I attended the huge protest march for Al-Quds Day that took place last Friday. I'll try to post a writeup with photos sometime soon.

BREAKING NEWS

Terrorists accused of plotting to wipe out the Ruling Family in Bahrain have been asked to call off a hunger strike.
Their supporters have meanwhile vowed to stage a naked gay parade outside His Majesty King Hamad bin Salman bin Isa bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa’s Palace in Riffa.
Channad. This is all I have right now. Do u think u would be interested in covering it?

Bahrania, I'm not fluent... far from it. But I can read the script fine, and I know enough to put together a few broken sentences that I can use for the important things in life ("3tini shawarma dajjaj, mayonaiz ziyada fih"). I can just about pick out the important points from news articles and TV using my always handy dictionary. And of course, I know just enough to enjoy the latest 3adel Emam film, or sing along to 3bdel7aleem.

I learnt to read the script from my Quran classes as a child. I learned the scraps of Arabic that I know from a bunch of random places over the years. Ifta7 Simsim (do you remember that?), Captain Majid, my friends in school, a short-lived class, 6arneeb nights with my lebanese and palestinian friends at uni.

Chan'ad.... As you very well know there are few, and I mean very FEW things more important than the words "3tini shawarma dajjaj, mayonaiz ziyada fih" Look at this from a logical standpoint.. Man cannot and should not live by bread alone..... MMMMM SHAWARMA... Mmmmmmmmmmm
