Great start to Ramadan

Sunday, October 17, 2004

I'm sure by now you must have heard of the bomb attacks in Baghdad on five Iraqi churches this morning. I am disgusted. We're only two days in to Ramadan and this is how my "Muslim brothers" have chosen to greet our Christian neighbours on the arrival of the holy month. When I was growing up, the tradition used to be that during Ramadan everyone would send a dish of food to their neighbours. I liked that better. My deepest condolences and prayers go out to all those affected by this.

I couldn't agree with you more Natasha. I have enjoyed countless iftars with my many Christian friends from Jordan, Palestine and Lebanon. The church attacks yesterday are a slap in the face of all the Christians and Muslim Arabs who have lived so comfortably with each other. More Iraqi Christians will leave Iraq after this incident, and if things keep going this way I fear this community, with such deep and historic roots in the land, will no longer exist there.

I hope hope hope that Muslim Arabs will stand up against this and give confidence to the Christians that they will be protected.
